The SSFF & ASIA 2025 Grand Prix Award Goes to Finland's Fabian Munsteyarm for 'Broken Pantyhose'

SSFF & ASIA 2025: A Celebration of Creative Excellence

The 27th edition of the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia (SSFF & ASIA), which is officially recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, has come to a magnificent close. With a theme of “creative active generative,” the festival aimed to create a dynamic space where filmmakers and audiences could connect and foster innovative interactions. Notably, this year’s event included a focus on generative AI, signifying an exciting shift in how creativity is approached in film.

On a celebratory day filled with anticipation, the award ceremony concluded with the announcement of the coveted George Lucas Award, marking a highlight of the festival. The award went to Broken Pantyhose (Pantyhose), directed by Finnish filmmaker Fabian Munsteyarm. This film not only won the International category for Live Action but is also a nominee for the upcoming Academy Awards Short Film category. The ceremony featured a total of five projects nominated across various categories, significantly expanding opportunities for recognition and connection to prestigious awards.

The jury, comprising notable figures such as Debo Adedayo, Jurina Ueno, and Mikiko Fukuma, praised Munsteyarm's work, noting the film's powerful portrayal of emotions through exceptional performances. The story revolves around a couple preparing to leave for an important event when disaster strikes – the woman’s pantyhose have a run. This seemingly trivial incident triggers a cascade of emotions as the narrative skillfully transitions control of feelings from her to him, encapsulating the essence of everyday drama in just a short span of time, all presented in a single take that heightens the viewer's connection with the characters and their plight.

In addition to the George Lucas Award, various awards were handed out during the ceremony. Noteworthy mention includes the Outstanding International Short Live Action Award, which went to Burning Night by Demon Wong from Hong Kong, capturing the youthful spirit and chaos of societal frustrations juxtaposed against the backdrop of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The Japan category saw Upside Down Genius by Ryotaro Nishi claiming the top prize, ingeniously relaying the bizarre life of a genius researcher who operates upside-down.

The festival not only celebrated established filmmakers but also showcased fresh talent. The U-25 category awarded Happy Valentine’s Day by Nine Shibata, a delightful music video that resonated with the struggles of high school romance through humor and energy.

This year, the festival received an astounding number of submissions, with over 1,980 entries across 91 countries for the International category alone, highlighting the global interest and diverse storytelling perspectives present at the event. Additionally, all nominated films from the official competition will be available for online streaming until June 30, 2025, through the festival's online theater platform, allowing audiences worldwide to appreciate and explore these remarkable narratives.

As we anticipate the creativity that will emerge in future editions, SSFF & ASIA continues to represent a cornerstone of artistic expression in the realm of short films, proving that even the briefest stories can leave lasting impressions.
