U.S. Travel Agencies Report $8.6 Billion in Air Ticket Sales for May 2025

U.S. Travel Agencies Make $8.6 Billion in Air Ticket Sales

According to recent data from the Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC), U.S.-based travel agencies achieved air ticket sales totaling a significant $8.6 billion in May 2025. This figure represents a 5% decrease compared to the same month last year, reflecting ongoing trends within the travel sector.

The latest statistics show that the total number of passenger trips recorded by ARC amounted to 25.8 million for the month of May. While this suggests a plateau, it simultaneously highlights a somewhat stable landscape amidst the shifts observed in travel behaviors and buying patterns.

ARC Ticketing Metric Total Month-Over-Month Variance Year-Over-Year Variance
-------------------
Total Sales $8.6 billion -2% -5%
Total Passenger Trips 25.8 million 0% 0%

International Trips 9.6 million +1% +1%
Average Ticket Price $530 -1% -2%
Average Economy Class Price $462 -2% +1%
Average Premium Class Price $1,201 -2% +2%

In contrast to the overall figures, passenger trips booked through online travel agencies saw a remarkable year-over-year increase of 8%. Yet, leisure and corporate travel agencies reported declines of 5% and 8% respectively. This discrepancy indicates a shifting focus toward digital booking platforms as preferences evolve among travelers.

ARC's Chief Commercial Officer Steve Solomon commented on the current travel landscape: "Overall travel demand remains steady despite a decline in corporate travel. Separate analysis by ARC has shown strength in domestic markets, including the U.S., this summer, which is a positive sign as we enter the typically busy summer travel season."

Additionally, New Distribution Capability (NDC) transactions, a modern standard in airline distribution, comprised 21.5% of total reported transactions for May 2025, an increase from 20.3% in the same month of 2024. In total, 948 travel agencies engaged in NDC transactions this May, further underscoring the shift towards advanced digital solutions in travel sales.

The Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC) serves as the industry's intelligence backbone, connecting various stakeholders within the air travel market and empowering critical commercial decisions. Managing the largest airplane ticketing dataset globally, ARC processes over $99 billion annually in U.S.-based agency air sales.

As travel patterns continue to evolve, industry professionals will need to adapt to these changes to thrive in a competitive landscape. The current data highlights both challenges and opportunities as the market navigates through changing consumer preferences and booking behaviors.
