Florida Warehouse Workers at UNFI Join Teamsters, Seeking Better Working Conditions

Florida Warehouse Workers Join Teamsters

In a significant move towards better working conditions, more than 230 warehouse employees at United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI) in Pompano Beach and Miami have made the choice to join Teamsters Local 769. This decision reflects a growing trend of union organizing efforts at UNFI facilities and highlights the desire for improved wages, benefits, and a safer work environment.

Roderick Jackson, a warehouse associate at UNFI and now a member of Local 769, expressed the collective sentiment, stating, "We joined the Teamsters because we need the protection of a strong, enforceable union contract." His words resonate with the determination of workers who have observed the positive changes their counterparts in other UNFI locations have achieved through union representation.

The recent vote marks another success in a wave of unionization efforts at UNFI, where over 3,000 workers have affiliated with the Teamsters since 2022. This latest achievement continues a streak of successful organizing campaigns, bringing the number of consecutive victories to 19, including a recent success in Lancaster, Texas.

Josh Zivalich, President of Local 769, warmly welcomed the new members, emphasizing their commitment to fighting for a contract that not only matches the gains of other UNFI Teamsters in Florida but also sets a precedent for future achievements.

As the largest wholesale distributor for Amazon-owned Whole Foods, UNFI employees across Florida, Georgia, and Illinois have recently ratified contracts that include substantial raises, health care benefits, robust pension plans, and added paid time off. This collective effort demonstrates a significant shift among UNFI workers, who are determined to advocate for their rights and standards in the workplace.

Tom Erickson, the Director of the Teamsters Warehouse Division, underscored the ongoing struggle of UNFI employees, stating, "UNFI workers are done being pushed around. They're fighting back and raising standards nationwide." With over 65% of UNFI’s workforce now represented by the Teamsters, the union is committed to extending its outreach and ensuring every UNFI employee enjoys the benefits of a strong labor contract.

Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters has a rich history of advocating for the rights and interests of working individuals across various sectors in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. With 1.3 million members, the union plays a crucial role in elevating labor standards and pushing for policies that protect workers’ rights.

The movements seen in UNFI and similar organizations signal a significant transition in labor relations, as more workers recognize the importance of union representation in their fight for fair treatment and better working conditions. As the collective efforts of workers continue to grow, the hope is to see lasting improvements that will benefit all members of the workforce.
